Suffering from elbow pain?

Are you suffering from pain on the outside of your elbow that has been persistent and affecting your day-to-day life? This could be a sign of tennis elbow, but what do we know about this condition?

Tennis elbow

Tennis elbow or Lateral epicondylitis is a tendinopathy at the main tendon origin site for the common extensor muscles of the hand and wrist. It is generally an overuse or repetitive strain injury, and it tends to occur in individuals that play sport such as tennis. It can be extremely painful and symptoms can last for a long time.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the elbow joint or radiating to the shoulder and wrist during or after movement

  • Struggling to move at the elbow and wrist, Painful during activities that involve gripping or twisting

  • Weakness in the muscles of the forearm

  • Tenderness on the outside of the elbow or forearm

Treatment options

Manual therapy

Mobilisation with movement can be utilised with other measures to reduce pain and facilitate exercises. Passive and assisted movements are used to reduce inflammation and restore normal function in the common extensor tendon

Corticosteroid injection

Has good outcomes however only on the short term (up to six weeks). The long-term outcomes are poor, and it was found to be linked to high recurrence rates.

Exercise and rehabilitation

The classical model for exercises in tendinopathy rehabilitation is eccentric contraction as a standard protocol. Essentially what this means is slow loading of muscles when it is at full length. This is something we would go through in person as part of your rehabilitation.
