The 3 different types of headaches and how chiropractic can help:

We have all likely experienced a headache at some point or another - with some of us having to deal with them far more often than we would like! Read on to see about the different types of headaches we can get and how chiropractic care can help.

Below are several headache conditions and the symptoms associated:

Cervicogenic headaches:

This is a headache that originates from the nerves being irritated by cervical facet joint restriction (the neck joints) – these headaches are typically felt around the back of the head and often radiate over one side, to either the temple or the eye. They can start randomly but are often made worse with poor posture, working, or strain through the shoulders and neck. There is normally a clear association between the neck feeling tight and a headache coming on.

Tension type headaches:

These headaches typically link more to stress and tension (hence the name!). These are usually always felt as a tight band across the forehead or over the eyes and is always felt on both sides. Stress tends to bring these headaches on and luckily, they are usually not too severe, but can be quite annoying. Posture, muscle tension, and joint restriction also all play a part in these headaches.

Migraines:

Migraines are one of the more debilitating types of headaches, and often have other symptoms associated with them rather than just being a headache! Migraines often have nausea, blurred vision, visual disturbances, as well as sensitivity to light, sound and even smell! Migraines with aura tend to have the visual disturbances prior to the headache coming on. Migraines have many causes, such as dietary, stress, and hormones – however spinal tension and posture can also have a huge play in them.

The head is a heavy part of the body – weighing about the same weight as a bowling ball! Every inch the head is forward on the shoulders creates an increase in weight to 10x the actual weight of your head. Therefore, we always talk about postural changes and the link with headaches!

When to seek care:

Headaches that last for several days is not normal and headaches that occur more than once a week is also not normal - and conservative care should be sought to help you. Chiropractic care is very effective at managing headaches and migraines and looking at why this happened in the first place, to prevent it happening again. We do this by chiropractic adjustments, massage, acupuncture, mobilisation, and functional rehabilitation with postural correction.

We always begin with a consultation to get a full picture of your pain and how it happened. We then do an examination with some tests on your nerves, muscles, and joints. Following this we form your diagnosis, prognosis, and plan of management. In your Results Session we go over what we found, how we can help, how many sessions we would recommend and the cost of care. We would normally do your 1st treatment in this session too.
