Returning to activity after Covid-19

COVID-19 can take a long time to recover from and it can have a significant effect on quality of life. During the illness people usually lose muscle strength, weight and develop joint stiffness. It is also estimated that you can lose 2% of muscle mass each day.

If you were unfortunate enough to require a stay in hospital, recovery can be a lengthy process, physical aspects of recovery can persist for weeks or months and in some circumstances even years! It might include heart and lung capacity, balance, impairments in muscle strength, pain, and walking ability leading to a loss of function and independence.

When should you begin recovery?

The short answer is as quick as you can, this will allow you to regain mobility and strength as soon as possible. Key points for recovery are:

·       Activity should be gradual with progression

·       Strengthen back, Leg and arm muscles

·       Work on balance and proprioception for long term benefits

What symptoms show that you need post COVID-19 or long COVID-19 treatment?

Musculoskeletal:

·       Weakness, functional decline

·       Decrease in muscle mass

·       Muscle and joint pain

Respiratory symptoms:

·       Decreased exercise tolerance

·       Shortness of breath

·       Fatigue

·       Difficulty performing basic tasks
